Rescue workers in Japan have recovered more bodies from Mount Ontake, bringing to 47 the number of those killed by Saturday's volcanic eruption.
The search resumed despite fears of toxic gases and another eruption.
The number of those unaccounted for is unknown but estimates say hundreds were at the summit at the time. Dozens were injured by falling debris.
Since then, volcanic tremors have been continuously detected with smoke still coming out of the volcano.
Police had earlier put the latest death toll at 48 but then revised it down by one.
The majority of bodies found near the summit on Wednesday were hikers, according to local police.
Helicopters have been used to bring the dead down from Mount Ontake.
Around 1,000 troops, police and fire fighters are involved in rescue operations.
The relatives of the dead and missing are waiting for news in a town hall in the nearby area of Kiso.
Danger continues
Experts have warned that the eruption is ongoing.
Seismologists had noticed increased seismic activity on Mount Ontake ahead of the eruption, but were still unprepared for what ensued.
The mountain, which is about 200km (125 miles) west of Tokyo, is one of Japan's 110 active volcanoes.
Its eruption on Saturday is the worst volcanic disaster in Japan for 90 years.

JOHANNESBURG -- Hope of finding the 200 schoolgirls who were kidnapped by Islamic militants in Nigeria diminished even further today. Back in April their plight was a sensation with pleas for their rescue from all over the world. First Lady Michelle Obama and Hollywood celebrities joined that chorus.
What became of all of that?
There has been no trace of the kidnapped schoolgirls for nearly seven months now, despite Nigeria's assurances a rescue operation was underway.
Boko Haram leader Abubaker Shekau has released a new video mocking any attempts to find them.
"We have married them off," he said, speaking in Hausa. "They are all in their marital homes."
The girls were abducted from their school on the eve of their final exams. It sparked a world wide campaign for their release. Under immense pressure, the Nigerian government made a suprise announcement more than two weeks ago that a truce had been reached -- an end to Boko Haram's reign of violence, and a return of the girls to their desperate families.
But Shekau emphatically states there never was a truce.
"Only battle," he said. "Hitting, striking and kiling with a gun."
In July, a former negotiator told CBS News "imagine the worst and it has happened." He said there were reports that many of the girls had been repeatedly raped, and others were sent across the border to neighboring Chad and Cameroon. It appears this may have been right.
So why did the government announce they had a truce?
It looks like Nigerian government has been scammed. CBS News spoke to a man who had direct knowledge of the rescue talks. He told us the authorities paid millions of dollars to a person fraudulently representing Boko Haram but actually had no power to secure the release of the kidnapped girls.
CBS News made repeated calls to the government, which kept promising to respond, but they all went unanswered today.

All 298 people aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 were killed when the airliner crashed Thursday in eastern Ukraine at Russia's border.
As the investigation unfolds, USA TODAY Network rounds up what we know and the questions left unanswered.
What happened?
The United States says a surface-to-air missile took down the jet. The Boeing 777 was flying over Ukraine's war-torn Donetsk region, the site of fighting between Ukraine and pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists.
Vice President Biden said the crash was "not an accident. It was blown out of the sky." Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk called the attack an "international crime." President Obama called it a "global tragedy."
Who took down the jetliner?
The Pentagon said Friday it is unlikely that pro-Russian separatists in east Ukrainecould obtain or operate the sophisticated missile system allegedly used to shoot down the Malaysia Airlines plane without Russian help.
The Pentagon says there is strong evidence the missile, a SA-11, was fired by Russian-backed separatists since the missile was fired from an area controlled by rebels.
The Obama administration said preliminary evidence suggests the aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile. Ukraine's government says the jetliner was shot down by a Russian aircraft.
Who was on board the flight?
The jetliner was carrying 298 people, including 80 children. The victims came from 11 countries. They included an acclaimed AIDS researcher from Amsterdam, a nun and teacher from Sydney, a Dutch senator, a Malaysian actress and a World Health Organization spokesman.
In a briefing Friday, President Obama said one American citizen was killed. Quinn Lucas Schansman was a dual citizen of the United States and The Netherlands, according to State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
What does the investigation look like so far?
World leaders demanded Friday that pro-Russia rebels who control the crash site give immediate, unfettered access to independent investigators to determine who took down the plane.
About 30 officials, mostly from the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe, arrived at the crash site. The rebels allowed the officials to carry out a partial and superficial inspection.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Saturday warned that any party that tries to block access to or contaminate the crash site is "no friend of justice" and "no friend of peace."
"Australia takes a very dim view of countries which facilitate the killing of Australians. The idea that Russia can wash its hands of responsibility because this happened in Ukrainian airspace just does not stand up to serious scrutiny. We all know what's happening in the Ukraine," he said.

Week3-Anti-China Riots in Vietnam Leave at Least 21 Dead
Protests against China's territorial ambitions in the South China Sea have spread to central Vietnam, where more factories have been torched. Hundreds of ethnic Chinese have fled the country
At least 21 people were killed as anti-China riots in southern Vietnam escalated and spread to the center of the country on Thursday.
A doctor in Ha Tinh province described five of the dead as Vietnamese workers and others as Chinese. He said they were among roughly 100 people sent to his hospital, Reuters reports. Over 600 Chinese have fled across the border to Cambodia.
The riots erupted following a large-scale demonstration on Tuesday to protest China’s May 1 deployment of an oil rig in waters claimed by both Beijing and Hanoi, triggering the most critical stand-off between the two countries in over three decades.
Rioters have torched and vandalized dozens of foreign-owned factories, mistaking them for Chinese enterprises. On Wednesday, they attacked a $20 billion Taiwanese-owned steel plant set to be the largest in Southeast Asia once it is completed in 2020.
About 600 people have been arrested for looting and inciting the crowd in Binh Duong province, where the riots started, state-run Thanh Nien newspaper quoted the local police chief as saying.
An editorial in the Beijing-friendly Global Times said that Vietnam had “cornered itself” and pointed out that demonstrators during similar outbursts of nationalist fervor in China — such as the anti-Japan demonstrations of 2012 — were more restrained. (However, Japanese automakers lost an estimated $250 million in output during the protests over the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islands.)
Vietnamese and Philippine hopes of a united regional stance in the face of Chinese assertiveness were meanwhile dashed as Southeast Asian leaders failed to agree on a joint statement during the ASEAN summit last weekend. Hanoi and Manila are the most embroiled in territorial conflicts with China in the South China Sea, but face opposition from neighboring countries with precious economic ties to Beijing.
The United States has called on both sides to show restraint, with White House spokesman Jay Carney telling a regular briefing that this kind of dispute needs “to be resolved through dialogue, not through intimidation.”

ANSAN, South Korea - Teenagers who survived the South Korea ferry disaster told on Monday how classmates helped them float free as water flooded their cabins despite crew instructions to stay put even as the vessel sank. Six teens, whose names were withheld to protect their privacy, were giving testimony at the trial of 15 crew members, who face charges ranging from homicide to negligence for abandoning the sinking ship. The ferry Sewol sank on April 16, killing 304 people, as many as 250 of them school children on a field trip.
"We were waiting and, when the water started coming in, the class rep told everyone to put on the life vests ... the door was above our heads, so she said we'll float and go through the door and that's how we came out," one of the teenagers said. "Other kids who got out before us pulled us out." Others described how coastguard officers waited outside the stricken ferry for passengers to swim out rather than entering the ship to try and rescue them. "They were outside. They pulled us [onto boats] but they didn't come inside to help," one said. "We said to ourselves, 'why aren't they coming in?'"

The latest negotiations in Brussels come a day after Russia stirred tensions with its war-torn neighbor still further by announcing plans to recognize the disputed leadership polls pro-Kremlin insurgents in eastern Ukraine intend to stage on Sunday.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's comments drew a sharp rebuke from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and coincided with a decision by EU leaders to keep sanctions in place against Moscow for its alleged meddling in Ukraine.
The former Soviet nation staged its own general election on Sunday that saw pro-European forces score a decisive victory at the expense of parties that once backed closer ties with Russia but now prefer to tread a more centrist course.
